The PSEAL program at Penn State is a distinctive opportunity crafted for faculty members eager to expand their leadership potential. With a dynamic blend of seminars, personalized mentorship, and independent learning, the program equips participants with an understanding of various leadership paradigms and effective strategies tailored to the academic environment. Emphasizing Penn State’s commitment to leadership in academia, participants will emerge with a refined personal leadership philosophy and a strategic development plan to guide their journey.

Program Highlights:

CliftonStrengths Assessment: Begin with an in-depth personal strengths evaluation, followed by individual coaching to lay the foundation for your leadership development.

Leadership Exploration: Dive into a thorough exploration of academic-specific leadership styles, aligning with your professional aspirations.

Interactive Workshops: Engage in a curated series of workshops spanning the semester, featuring:

  1. Expert-led sessions on key topics including ethical leadership and conflict resolution.
  2. Penn State-centric interactive discussions with internal leaders, sharing valuable insights and experiences.

Expert Mentorship: Establish a mentor-mentee partnership to explore the practicalities of academic leadership roles and contribute to your growth through direct engagement and job shadowing opportunities.

Mentoring Others: Enhance your mentoring capabilities by supporting new faculty within the New Faculty Network (NFN) program.

Networking Opportunities: Forge lasting connections with peers in the PSEAL community, fostering a supportive learning environment.

Development Action Plan: Finalize your participation by formulating a leadership philosophy statement and a custom action plan for ongoing development.

Mentorship & Networking:

Mentorship is a cornerstone of the PSEAL experience. Participants benefit from the wisdom of established leaders while also mentoring new faculty, thus enhancing their leadership and mentoring skills. We encourage securing a mentor prior to application and offer assistance for those seeking mentorship partnerships. If you would like assistance in finding a mentor, please indicate this within the application. Tips for how to secure a mentor and a guide of what will be expected of them are available on the Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs website.

This program is a testament to your dedication to professional advancement. Active participation in all program components, including seminars, cohort sessions, and assignments, is essential for maximizing the program’s benefits.

The 2024 PSEAL sessions will convene on most Fridays during the fall semester, from 2:00 to 5:00 PM via Zoom. Engaging in this program signifies a commitment to your professional growth. To fully benefit, you must have minimal conflicts on Fridays, collaborate with your mentor, actively participate in cohort sessions, and complete individual assignments. Please note the program will launch on Friday, August 16th, from 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM via Zoom, this is two Fridays before the start of the academic semester.

Completion of the program, which includes strong attendance and the completion of assignments, will result in a Provost Endorsement in Leadership and Service.

Eligibility & Application:

  • To be eligible for this program, the applicant should not currently be an academic administrator at the level of academic unit head (department head, division head, school director, or DAA) or higher (associate dean, dean, chancellor, or institute director) or they should have less than two years of experience in that role.
  • This program is open to any full-time tenured or non-tenure-track faculty member who has been promoted to the second rank (typically the associate level, such as associate professor for tenure-line or associate professor of teaching, research, or clinical for non-tenure-line).
  • This form must be completed in one sitting – it cannot be saved for later.
  • Once the form is submitted, it cannot be edited. If you need to cancel or request a change to your form after submission, please contact talentmgmt@psu.edu
  • You will receive a notification email should the Talent Management team need to request additional information in the inquiry

Before applying, please reach out to an academic administrator of your choosing to ask if they are willing to serve as your mentor. If you need assistance in finding a mentor, please indicate this within your application.

Expressions of interest (applications) will be accepted February 12 – March 1, 2024 via Penn State WorkDay. Notification of acceptance will distributed in early May.
