​Kathleen Bieschke
Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs

 

 

 

 

Kathy Bieschke was appointed Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs at the Pennsylvania State University in August 2017. She earned a B.S. in Psychology and an M.S. in Clinical Psychology from Illinois State University, and a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology in 1991 from Michigan State University. She joined the faculty at Penn State University in 1991 and is a professor of education. Bieschke was an administrative fellow for Penn State’s Executive Vice President and Provost in 2012-2013. She served as Head of Educational Psychology, Counseling, and Special Education from 2013-2016, and as Interim Dean of the Schreyer Honors College in 2016-2017.

Areas of Responsibility: Dr. Bieschke is responsible for overseeing the many facets of faculty affairs at Penn State’s 24 campuses and its close to 6,500 full-time faculty members. She collaborates closely with deans, campus chancellors, department heads, faculty committees, and relevant University offices (i.e., Affirmative Action Office, Office of General Counsel, Office for Research Protections, Office of Ethics and Compliance) in fulfilling the position’s broad responsibilities. She serves as a member of the President’s Council, Academic Leadership Council, University Park Council of Academic Deans, Provost’s Staff, and Chair of the Faculty Affairs Advisory Council. Dr. Bieschke is the policy steward for all of Penn State’s academic policies and faculty processes and has direct oversight of the University’s promotion and tenure review process and mandated periodic academic administrative evaluations of deans and other individuals who report to the Provost. She is responsible for executive searches for positions that report directly to the Provost. Dr. Bieschke serves as a member and liaison to the University Faculty Senate in several capacities, including representing the Provost on the Committee on Faculty Affairs. She provides guidance on academic human resources, working closely with deans, human resources strategic partners, and the Office of General Counsel; oversees the response to all hotline reports pertaining to faculty; and works closely with Penn State’s University Ombudsperson. Dr. Bieschke is responsible for Penn State’s leadership and faculty development activities and serves as Penn State’s liaison to the Big Ten Academic Alliance’s (BTAA) Vice Provost for Faculty and Academic Affairs group and works closely with the BTAA’s Academic Leadership Program and Department Executive Officer seminars.

 

Abby Diehl
Associate Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs

 

 

Abby Diehl has served as Associate Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs at Penn State since July 2024 and as Assistant Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs since 2020. Prior to her roles in the Office of the Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs, Diehl served as assistant dean for career development and engaged learning in Penn State’s College of Health and Human Development. In that role and in other roles in the college over the span of 20 years, her areas of responsibility included alumni relations, leadership initiatives, education abroad, and communications. She also served as a Penn State Administrative Fellow during the 2012-13 academic year. She received her Ph.D. in higher education in 2007, an M.Ed. in higher education in 2001, and a B.A. in advertising and public relations in 1996, all from Penn State.

Areas of Responsibility: Diehl provides strategic leadership for the implementation of academic policies and procedures, data utilization, and other initiatives that pertain to faculty and administrators at Penn State. She interfaces with academic leadership and advisory groups about how best to ensure collaboration and integration with Penn State policies, systems, and processes; monitors compliance with academic HR policies; and makes recommendations for the development and modification of policies. She oversees data pertaining to faculty and the development of reports and information that inform University decision-making. She oversees policies and practices related to non-tenure-line faculty appointments and promotion. She also manages sabbatical leaves and phased retirements.

 

Ann Clements
Associate Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs – Faculty Development

 

 

 

 

Ann Clements is the Associate Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs – Faculty Development. She earned a BME degree from the University of Puget Sound and an M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Washington (2002). She is a professor of music education and founder and former director of Penn State’s Center for Pedagogy in Arts and Design (C-PAD), where she oversaw faculty professional development within the College of Arts and Architecture. She has served as the head (2016-2020) and the graduate program chair (2013, 2015-21) of music education and served multiple terms as a faculty senator.

Areas of Responsibility: Clements is responsible for developing and implementing a strategic vision for faculty development and providing leadership in programming that supports faculty from recruitment through retirement. In collaboration with campuses and colleges, she is responsible for creating, managing, and delivering a range of programming to enhance faculty success and academic leadership excellence at Penn State. She oversees the evaluation of program effectiveness and assesses tenure-line and non-tenure-line faculty and leadership development needs University-wide. Areas of emphasis include new faculty onboarding, implementing a University-wide mentoring program, training new administrators, and enhancing the recruitment and retention of diverse faculty. Clements also collaborates with faculty and administrators across Penn State, in addition to networking with colleagues at peer institutions and the Big Ten Academic Alliance to identify and implement best practices for faculty-development programming.
